Constipation in children

It is defined as delay or difficulty in defecation ( act of passing stool) , usually lasting for more than two weeks.

It is manifested in the form of passing hard stools (sometimes associated with blood) , painful defecation, or delayed passage of stools.

Symptoms of chronic constipation

Infants and young children may have holding or tightening of hips, walking on tiptoes, poor appetite, making faces or extreme crying.

Causes of constipation

Most of the cases do not have any serious medical issues. It can be precipitated by febrile  illness, decreased intake of water, forcefully toilet training, or dirty toilets in the school.

Most parents feel guilty or are concerned about some serious issue or illness affecting their child.

Management

Most of the cases can be managed by diet modification, behaviour, therapy, and medications in some cases. Investigations are required only in a few cases.
