Persistent diarrhoea

It is defined as a diarrhoea which starts as an acute episode, but persists for more than 14 days.

Main causes are

  • Persistent infection
  • Malabsorption ( where eaten food is not completely digested by the body) of carbohydrates and fats
  • Infrequently dietary protein intolerance

Usually, children remain well hydrated, but sometimes it can cause growth faltering.

Management

Initially reduce lactose ( main sugar present in milk) intake by reducing milk intake to 50 to 60 ML per KG per day. Some children may require stopping of milk. your doctor may advise a specialised diet, depending on the severity of illness.

Your doctor gave some other medicines, depending on the  cause.
